ASHEBORO — The N.C. Zoo set a new three-day holiday weekend record of 32,734 visitors over the Memorial Day weekend.The previous record was 25,806 for the three-day Memorial Day weekend in 2005.“We shattered it,” said Rod Hackney, the N.C. Zoo’s public relations manager, about the previous record.Zoo officials believe several factors contributed to the record attendance.They attribute media coverage of the new Watani Grasslands Reserve, featuring an enlarged elephant herd in a new habitat which unveiled in April, to more visitors.
