beard no more

It was time...the heat was getting to my Clyde. He decided that Saturday was the time to shave his beard. Before...
and after.

I already miss the beard. Hopefully he will grow another one for me sometime this year.
We are back @ the pool. Here are the 4 Wardlings that I took to the pool. (Josh was @ scout camp.) I love taking them to the pool. They have so much fun and I love to watch them and play with them in the water.
I am always amazed @ the garden's growth. I had my first Enrichment night here @ the Brown House last Thursday and we built the 3rd garden box on the right. In it we planted cucumbers, butternut squash and watermelon. The Wardlings and I planted more cucumbers, squash, and pumpkins this morning. I am hoping for a great bounty this year. (tomatoes and ocre)

have you noticed...

that celebrities die in threes??? this week... Farrah Fawcett
then Michael Jackson.

and finally Billy Mays. (OxyClean guy)

Actually in this case 4...Ed McMahan died last week too.

past celebrity deaths in 3's...

Jimmy Hendrix, Jim Morrison, and Janice Joplin

Princess Diana, Mother Theresa, and Gianni Versace

John Ritter, Johnny Cash, and Robert Palmer

the list goes on and on...

turtle fun

In the early evening, it began to rain here. Worried about my garden, I took a peek out the window and I spotted this turtle mosey-ing in the front yard. The Wardlings were excited to see him. Clyde grabbed the flip and began to film our brief encounter with the turtle. It was a short visit, but a fun one.

our new cousin

This morning around 3:30am, our new aunt Michelle was hard @ work delivering this new little guy. He weighed in @ 7 lbs. 14oz. He is adorable! Congrats Kellen and Michelle!! We loved meeting him today. :) He makes the 12th grandchild on my side with #13 due in January.

in the paper

At 8 a.m. this morning, my good friend, Michelle called me. She said, 'Hello Star!' What? Then she continued to tell me that her husband was flipping through the newspaper @ work this morning and lo and behold there we were with a few of our trek children. He called her and she called me. I am quite flattered, but out of the 1000's of photographs taken, why this one to be the picture that goes with the story? I am wearing sunglasses for pete's sake! Neither Clyde nor I were mentioned by name, but it was sweet to see this morning. Ahh...trek times!

scout camp

Yesterday was the first day of scout camp for Josh. He was a bit nervous when I dropped him off. He is having fun, but is way upset that he is missing out on the family fun of swimming during the day. That's right we are back @ the pool. Oh how I love going to the pool.

Sunday nite we met up with Clyde's folks @ South of the Border to get Erin and Jacob. We went up to the tower and just had some nice family fun. We didn't make it home until 12:30am, so we were all a bit tired the next day. (Clyde and Penny match, oh how cute!)

trek tales

Here is our trek Polish family on day one. We were missing one of our boys. He arrived after we took the photograph. Shortly after this picture was taken, we gathered together as a whole, sang 'The Spirit of God' and a mob arrived shooting, so we had to gather our stuff and leave.

I realized that I had forgotten my memory card for our camera, so not a ton of pictures were taken by me. I thought about it later and decided that it was good just to have enjoyed the experience. (However, loads upon loads of photos were taken and we will be given a disc with them all, so there will be more photos to add.) Day one was MISERABLY hot. I didn't really think about how hot my clothing was going to be until we were already moving. I learned from my mistake and day 2's clothes were alot lighter...no apron or gloves. I rolled up my bloomers of sorts to keep my legs cooler.
So Day one, was hot, dang hot. Due to the rain, the trails that we were going to be going on, were closed and plan b was implemented, which added 3 miles to our journey. We were the 1st of 4 companies to leave on day 1. Our youth were spectacular. The trails were rough, strenuous, hot muggy, and wet. I could seriously feel myself getting woozy due to the heat. Clyde had a rough time cooling down and when we made it to the base camp, had to sit down and cool off with ice packs. A gal from our ward MF, was way nice to come and fan us. She kept asking me if I was ok because apparently was bright red in the face. We gathered all of our stuff, built our family's camp site, and began the dutch oven meal of enchiladas. Not my favorite. (To be honest, I was afraid of having the runs out in the wilderness if I ate it. No bathrooms, or porta-potties either. Not a good woods pooper I am.) It took close to an hour to cook it thoroughly. Our children were starving and were happy to eat the meal, even if it was cooked by me. We had a hard time keeping the coals lit in the coal chimney stack thing. I was too hot to eat the hot meal and ate 1/2 of a PB&J sandwich. It was still just too hot to eat. The first night was miserable. I didn't sleep @ all. My mind kept racing, plus I could hear the bugs landing on the tent. There was also a dance on the 1st nite. Most of our youth were too tired to dance or didn't want to use up their energy, so it was just a sit and chat nite.

We awoke bright and early on day 2, so that we could eat and be on the trails EARLY. Eight people were sent home on day 1, 3 going straight to the ER, so it was decided that we had to leave earlier than planned to stay cool. Day 2 was just as hot but, but we were better prepared with better snacks and kool-aid/ gatorade. Both Clyde and I felt way, way better than the day before. Day 2 was also the women's march up the hill with awesome angels to help. (There are so many stories to tell that I think that I will have to have separate posts to tell them.) We crossed creeks, slid down mud slides, ran up 5 or more hills longer than 1/2 a football field, walked through a dead tree graveyard, which hurt BTW, and enjoyed our company. We returned to camp last that day, as planned and enjoyed another great dinner, an Indian speaker/ fireside and the testimony mtg.

Day 3 started with a bang, literally as gun shots woke us up. I could've/ should've thrown shoes @ the gal by our tent because she just kept shooting. We were inside changing our clothes and so she thought that we were still sleeping. I should've tackled her. Again, we had our breakfast and broke camp. We ended up having to wait, because we were quite efficient in our wanting to get the show on the road. We left as 2nd company and we stayed close. Again more hills, creeks to cross, and good cheer. AND- the high lite of trek walking on day 3 was that I was charged w/ one of my girls by a deer. no joke. I was standing @ the end of our handcart and a baby deer, yells, charges one of my trek daughters and runs against the back my legs, then darts up the revene that we were standing beside. It was hillarious! There were some re-enactments along the way...most a bit cheesy. Again, another post.

Here we are marching into the valley. Clyde and I are in the shot, it's a find Waldo moment...better known as find Clyde and Ashley. We took turns pushing or pulling these handcarts. (I'm one of 4 in the front, pulling the cart along.)

I so swiped these two photos from facebook. The below picture says it all.

I am glad that we had the opportunity to go. I can't say that I am ready to do another one, but in 4 years when Erin and Libby are old enough to go, I'll be ready to tag along.

dang mud

We are off on our adventure for the summer in just a few hours. This adventure seemed like months in the future & is now mere hours away. We packed all day, loaded the van and delivered the items to the camp site. Let me just say MUD! With all the loveliness of rain, comes some nice red NC clay/mud. As we were unloading the gear I studied to ground and there are mud puddles that if stepped in, would suck you in ankle deep. Clyde was kind to think of some nice galoshes for me. I haven't broken them in, obviously, but I am hoping that they will do the trick. Just remember ankle deep mud.

So, we were asked to choose a country to represent on this Pioneer Trek...representing all the immigrants from around the world that joined in the trek west to Zion. We, of course, chose Poland. I wanted to take our banner and totally embroider it up, but alas it was vetoed @ our last Ma/Pa meeting. So, I thought that I would do the same kind of embroidery, just by hand, so that I could whip stitch it into place while there. Any guesses on the saying? These patches of sorts will be placed on a banner that 1- will be hung from our handcart and b-will represent our family, country, and desire to make it to Zion. Feel free to leave comment guesses. (Fear not they will be posted once we return from our trip.)

A special shout out Thank you to our folks who have our children and those who let us borrow dutch ovens, tents, red fabric strips, clothing, water buckets, and supplied the bug spray! THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!

And we're off.................
It says, 'Onward Ever Onward.'

yahooo!

The last day of school was yesterday. YAHOOOO!!! This means no more 6am wake up alarms...for 2 months. Josh asked me why I was waking him up so early yesterday morning. When I told him that he still had one more day of school, he looked utterly sick to his stomach. They got to school on time and Clyde, Penny and I went back to school for Libby's 5th grade graduation. (I wasn't too impressed with the ceremony. It was just a plain ole ceremony...no hoop-la.) She got an award for being a library assistant and A/B Honor Roll for the last 9 weeks. She also received her diploma. Sweet. What was cool about the ceremony was after when they had the 5th graders and their families walk down the hall for the last time. The entire school was lined up along the hallway applauding. It was our "Rudy" moment. Then they had cake and juice served to the 5th grade and families in a small reception. Oh Libby...We are so very proud of all your hard work...Off to middle school!

After her good-byes and photo ops, we took L and P home, ate lunch and returned to school for Josh's award ceremony, this time armed with a pillow to sit upon. After having a broken tailbone, hard metal chairs are no longer my friends. I felt a bit dumb, but comfy. Josh won his addition award, along with Study Island award, and the National Fitness Award, signed by President Obama. He looked very shy when getting his awards. We are very proud of Josh! We went back to his classroom, to of course take pictures, grab his stuff and say adieu for the summer. We learned who his new teacher would be and his teacher, Mrs. O'M was thrilled to have him in the new teacher's room!

We then let Josh pick out some ice cream with all the fixings and had an ice cream party of our own. Congratulations to all the Wardlings on another completed school year! Now...on to two months of hibernation and pool fun!

since i last posted

Since last Tuesday, when I posted last, our week has been a whirlwind. We'll start with Wednesday in which we began the day with dentist appointments. All 5 @ one time. We occupy 2 chairs @ a time and we were there for 2 hours. All is well with the Wardlings teeth. Penny puts on such a show. The hygienists all get a kick out of her visit. Of course the hygienists pass along loads of goodies to take home.
Late Wednesday night, Grammy and Papa came to town. They spent Wednesday night and Thursday night with us. We went to a park close by and had a picnic dinner. Ricky and his Mayra came to the park and ate with us and later we were joined by Clyde's other brother Rusty and his Lauren and their twins.

Friday morning when Ed and Becki left, they took Erin and Jacob along with them for the week. Josh and Libby stayed with Grammy and Papa over spring break and so it was now Erin and Jacob's turn. They are having a blast with Grammy & Papa @ the beach. Then mid morning, we had more company...Maylee and Jared came by for a visit and spent the night with us. They brought along their new addition...Oola. Stay tuned for more to come on the adventures of Oola in the Brown house with the Wardlings. We went to Libby's talent show (which I will post photos of soon) and then we checked the Wardlings out of school and hit the Emerald City. We ended up @ a history museum downtown. (Again, I'll post pictures soon.) This was one of my favorite works of art in the museum. The museum itself is a converted church and so they kept the stain glass window. I just thought it was very pretty.

After the museum, we hit the fountains, where the Wardlings had a blast getting wet. They ran in and out of the sprinklers until they were nearly soaked. They had such fun!

The talent show, museum, and sprinklers didn't only wear out Miss Penny....Jared was asleep before we made it home.
Saturday we went by Sister D's costume shop for some vital pieces of Clyde's trek wardrobe. I just love being in the costume shop. There are so many works of art that Sister D has created. She is such a wonderful gal!! Speaking of the trek, I finished my clothes and we are doing the packing tomorrow. We leave Thursday morning. It is supposed to rain every day.

push-me-popper

Yesterday morning, Penny woke Clyde and I up dressed as Bat Girl. She was so lively and energetic all dressed up @ 6:15am. She was so funny growling @ us and kicking her legs. The funniest part were her poses. What a funny Wardling!!

Last evening was the day to mow the yard. It was some thick grass after the rain that we have had. Clyde ended up having to mow it twice just to get the grass where it needed to be. Penny was the ultimate helper. She got out the push-me-popper & mowed the yard with Clyde. Jacob and Josh both took turns mowing the grass with Dad.

Here she is today...on her last day of being a 6th grader! How oh pretty! Congrats on finishing the 6th grade Erin!!
Below are some pictures of the rain, the water depths, a primary activity that the Wardlings had on Saturday, and our garden growth. (The first couple of photos were swiped off of a local news stations blog.) We have nice green beans coming in and tomatoes have begun to grow. I love watching plants grow! We planted a few more rows of g.beans yesterday. Our sunflowers were broken off due to the rain, so we have re-planted a few of them as well.

darth vader s.o.s.

Clyde sent this Darth Vader picture to me today and I thought that it was kinda funny.

I have been busy as a bee sewing up some of the necessary clothes for the upcoming trek. I must admit that I am less than thrilled about a few aspects of the planning process and events for the trek. I must get into my head all the positives about going...a few days with Clyde, sleeping in tents, eating dutch-oven prepared food, pooping in the woods, and getting to have the Pioneer experience. I have done some research on the era and am just trying to prepare myself emotionally for those 3 days. I have compiled lists upon lists of the necessities that will be required to take along with us. I am trying to think of anything and everything for EVERY situation so that we are ready. Clyde is alot better @ adventures like this than I am. I am a planner, and am uncomfortable with 'going w/ the flow' in nearly all instances. Pray for us!

After I typed out my LONG post on the most recent weather adventures of last week and posted it, I realized that I posted it to the wrong blog. I have a separate crafty blog thing, that I do not maintain as often as this one. I was so bummed. I tried to copy/paste it to this one, but no luck. I think that I am still blog challenged. Anyway this is it from my other blog. Happy reading.

not so quiet on the eastern front

Holy crow did the sky open last night. We had a 40% chance of rain and let me tell you, it dumped on the Emerald City. There was flooding. We are lucky to have the brown house up on a hill (not fun to mow...my poor Clyde) but good for the rain flow. It was raining so hard that we even lost power for 5+ hours. When it was time to leave for church, we ran to get into yellow and made it as far as the end of the street. The rain was coming down really hard. I turned around and headed back to the brown house and there we waited for about 10 minutes, until there was a slight break in the rain. We made it safe and sound to the last pack mtg. for the summer. (Even the church, we lost power for about 30 seconds.)
The scouts practiced tying more knots and lashings. I love how Josh really gets into it and concentrates so hard on the task @ hand.

The younger scouts put on a skit for us. We were asked to take out my sisters dog, so after church, we headed to her place. They still had power. We fed and pottied their dog and raced home. (Well, we were being safe, so not really racing.) Still no power. It was funny to hear the Wardlings asked about fans and the refrigerator. Our kids sleep with fans on for the noise and Josh said that we just needed to go buy a new fan. We laughed and tried to explain that our fans work just fine, when there is electricity and we had none. The Libby asked about the refrigerator working. Again, it was just funny. One of our neighbors stopped by to check on us, while another one broke out their generator. Clyde started a movie on the laptop and by the time that the Wardlings had quieted down, the movie started and the power came back on. We learned alot about preparedness...1- make sure all cell phones are charged...@ all times. 2- have plenty of candles, flashlights, batteries, lanterns etc. c- have ice in the big freezer to help preserve the food in it. 4- have stuff to do with kids. 5- we need a rain barrel. I also thought that we really need some type of sand bags for the back of our house. We also come to the conclusion that we'd rather be without power in the cold than in the heat. At least in the cold, we can just add clothing to stay warm, but when your hot, your HOT and SWEATY here in the south.

I was so worried about my wee garden during the absolute down pour of rain. About 30 minutes into the rain, the water was puddled in the garden beds. I ran to get our tarps to cover them. Jacob didn't understand why I did it, so this morning I told him it was to preserve the food that we are growing for our family. It made me think of all the farmers that have lost crops due to storms. Luckily our garden is small and we have time left to replant. Plus the plants were just beginning to sprout, so nothing really would be lost. However if it were later in the season, we'd be in bad shape. Clyde and I were soaked to the skin after putting tarps over the garden. I really appreciated Clyde's help in covering them up. The rain was cold. He even went out while we were @ church to empty the tarps. What a sweetie! He said that the rain puddles in the tarp went up to his wrist. This was 1 bed this morning. Two of the tomato plants looked squished, so I tied them up. They weren't broken. The ocre is coming in nicely and again I am glad that they are just sprouting, otherwise the water in the tarp would have flattened the plants.
We are due for 2 more days of rain. I'd say the drought was over.

summer fun

Clyde, along with the head soccer coach from his school, took the boys and girls soccer teams to see a professional game here in the Emerald City Saturday night. They all had such fun. Right as they got into the stadium however, Josh got knocked hard in the head by a soccer players stray ball. The ball hit Josh way hard in the head, knocking his glasses off and making Josh see stars. It was terrible.

Libby came home with this sweet jersey signed by the goalie.
Here are my Wardlings enjoying themselves @ the game. Erin, Penny and I hung here enjoying a disc of the Gilmore girls. We ran out and got ourselves some yummy snacks to enjoy the shows.
For family nite we watched "The Chronicles of Narnia, Prince Caspian." We had such a fun night hanging with one another eating some popcicles. At the end of the movie, there is this awesome song by Regina Spektor called "The Call." Oh I love it.

Then on Monday, we got together with Plus One and her family for some slip-n-slide fun. Oh the Wardlings had so much fun! Ah-summer fun is here...
On a total side note...we have been blogging now for 2 years. Happy bloggaversary to us!

new moon trailer

The New Moon Trailer is now available to see here. Clyde and I watched the MTV awards to be able to catch a glimpse of the trailer. Clyde was more excited to see the new GI Joe movie trailer than New Moon. How funny was the Eminem butt thing?! :)
